Help name St. Petersburg’s “First Pup”
Soon, St. Petersburg will have a new furry figurehead to make appearances at city events and official functions. Members of the public are invited to help name the city’s “First Puppy.”
This “First Pup” is not just any puppy. It has a big responsibility in its future. One day it will be a guide dog for a visually impaired individual. This adorable goldador (Labrador retriever/golden retriever cross) is part of Southeastern Guide Dogs’ program and is being raised by a local volunteer family in St. Petersburg.
St. Petersburg’s “First Puppy” will help raise awareness for Southeastern Guide Dogs’ 26th Annual Walkathon, to be held at St. Petersburg’s Vinoy Park on Saturday, March 3rd, and also draw attention to the organization’s mission and accomplishments. Anyone wishing to submit a name for St. Petersburg’s “First Puppy” should visit www.stpete.org/firstpup . Mayor Bill Foster will review the names submitted, and the puppy and name will be introduced at a City Council meeting in February. Throughout the year, followers of the city’s Facebook page will see updates on the puppy’s training and official appearances as an ambassador of St. Petersburg.
