Alex Sink will talk flood insurance today at “high-risk” Pinellas home

Alex Sink will visit a home in a FEMA high-risk flood zone this afternoon to discuss her plans for reforming the National Flood Insurance Program flood insurance system and hold off spikes in premiums for Pinellas County.

Sink will hold a 2 p.m. press conference outside the property at 735 37th Ave. Northeast in St. Petersburg, joined by a group of Pinellas residents, homeowners and community leaders.

The Biggert-Waters Act of 2012 effectively ends federal subsidies for homes located in flood zones, as well as directing FEMA to draw new maps focusing on “realistic” flood dangers. It meant hundreds of homes in Pinellas County saw changes in flood zone designations, which increased their NFIP flood insurance rates by as much as thousands of dollars.

The Democratic candidate for Florida’s Congressional District 13 will discuss “her proposals and her commitment to bringing Republicans and Democrats together to focus on tackling this critical challenge in Washington.”

Sink, former Florida CFO and 2010 gubernatorial candidate, faces Republican David Jolly and Libertarian Lucas Overby in an increasingly contentious CD 13 race.

The special election is March 11.
