Gov. Rick Scott on Thursday tapped Col. Chad Chronister to take over as the next Hillsborough County Sheriff.

Chronister, who has spent 25 years in the sheriff’s office, will replace Sheriff David Gee on Sept. 30. Gee, who spent 13 years in the post, in May announced his intention to step down after winning re-election last year.

Chronister, 49, will complete Gee’s term, which ends Nov. 13, 2018.

“Colonel Chronister has spent 25 years in the Sheriff’s Office, rising through the ranks and proving himself to be a strong leader who exemplifies the office’s mission to serve, protect, and defend Florida families. I’m confident that he will continue Sheriff Gee’s great work in Hillsborough County,” Scott said in a statement after making the announcement in Tampa Thursday afternoon.

Gee lauded Scott’s selection of Chronister, saying he is “undoubtedly qualified and capable of serving the citizens of Hillsborough County as Sheriff.”
