Sarasota Republicans named U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz as its 2014 Statesman of the Year, joining a list of past Republican standard-bearers such as Sean Hannity and Donald Trump.

The Republican Party of Sarasota will honor the Texas Tea Party lawmaker — referred to as “The Conservative Champion” – at its annual reception February 20 in the Sarasota Hyatt Regency.

Cruz is “a passionate fighter for liberty, economic growth, and the Constitution,” who has “seen first-hand the miracle of freedom and opportunity in America,” according to the RPOS website announcing the event.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with an award rally at the Hyatt, followed by a VIP reception and photo op at 6:30 p.m. at the Sarasota Yacht Club. General  rally tickets are $15, with VIP tickets going for $250.

With a donation of $5,000 per person/couple, supporters can also attend an exclusive private dinner event with Cruz. Time, date and location of the dinner are yet to be determined.

The Sarasota Hyatt Regency is located at 1000 Boulevard of the Arts; the Sarasota Yacht Club is at 1100 John Ringling Blvd.
