The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department said Monday it is investigating vandalism to a Confederate memorial in Seffner.
Deputies were sent to Confederate Memorial Park, best known for its flagpole adorned with a Confederate flag visible from I-75, at around 11 a.m. Sunday after a passer-by called 911 to report the vandalism.
All of the granite columns of the memorial were covered in red paint and graffiti, with drops of paint covering the cement foundation of the monument. The Sheriff’s office said the defacing also included derogatory remarks written in paint.
One of the scrawled words was “AntiFa,” shorthand for anti-fascist, and the name of a loosely connected group of people who oppose the “alt-right” and other far right groups.
The memorial is located on land donated by a member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans. The memorial was erected after the group raised about $150,000 for its construction.
Deputies are asking anyone with information on the crime or the identity and whereabouts of the perpetrator to call the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office at (813) 247-8200.
