Darden Rice received a major endorsement Thursday from the Service Employees International Union in her re-election bid to the St. Petersburg City Council.
SEIU stands for city workers in St. Petersburg. Rice now serves as City Council chair.
“Darden Rice is a true champion for the working people of St. Petersburg,” said Alphonso Mayfield, President of SEIU Florida Public Services Union, in a statement Thursday. “Her work on the Wage Theft Program, fair hiring practices and other pro-worker initiatives show that she talks the talk and walks the walk.
“SEIU members are strongly reaffirming support for her re-election to the City Council. Darden’s continued service, with her effective and creative leadership, is essential to optimizing the inclusivity, prosperity and sustainability of St. Petersburg. We’re excited to continue working with her for the next four years.”
Rice is seeking her second term on Council, and has already received endorsements from the St. Petersburg Association of Firefighters and the Sun Coast Police Benevolent Association.
“I’m humbled to have the endorsement of the SEIU Florida,” Rice responds. “Our city employees do an amazing job and I join our residents in thanking them for the work they do. All workers can count on me to continue my advocacy and always stand up for our residents.”
