Many major events in the Tampa Bay area are being shut down on Thursday and Friday in advance of Hurricane Irma’s potential to make landfall this weekend in the Sunshine State.
Candidates for St. Petersburg mayor and three City Council races will face off with two city-sponsored forums set for September.
Rick Kriseman‘s strong advocacy of St. Petersburg police chief Tony Holloway has become a campaign issue in the race against Rick Baker, but it won’t be in the race for City Council District 2. Both Barclay Harless and Brandi Gabbard both support Holloway staying on the job, regardless of who is elected mayor in November.
There’s been relatively little focus on the St. Petersburg City Council District 2 race between Barclay Harless and Brandi Gabbard, but that will change once the calendar turns to September.
An eight-person field has narrowed to Justin Bean and Gina Driscoll in the St. Petersburg City Council District 6 race. They will face off in 10 weeks to succeed term-limited Karl Nurse. Robert Blackmon came in an extremely close third, behind Driscoll by only four votes, setting off an automatic recount.
An eight-person field in the St. Petersburg District 6 City Council race will become a two-person race after Tuesday night. But it’s far from certain who those two candidates will be, at least until returns begin trickling in starting 7 p.m.
St. Petersburg banker Barclay Harless has received the endorsement of the Suncoast Sierra Club. The support comes as a welcome boost to Harless’ bid to win the City Council District 2 race in November.
