Lightning edges Blackhawks for seventh consecutive victory

in Sports by

No, it wasn’t the Stanley Cup finals. For a game in late January, however, it wasn’t bad. The Tampa Bay Lightning won its seventh game in a row Thursday night, squeezing off the Chicago Blackhawks in a 2-1 game. Chicago, the defending Stanley Cup champions, had only 18 shots on the night as their 12-game winning streak ended. “One streak was ending tonight, and I’m glad it was theirs,” said Lightning coach Jon Cooper. “I’d trade what happened tonight for…

Lightning now must make a play with Steven Stamkos’ contract

in Sports/Top Headlines by

He moved around his room, in his house, in the name of his sport. By now, Steven Stamkos belongs here at Amalie Arena. He knows the cooridors. He knows the training rooms. On the night when Game Seven was scheduled, he certainly knows his way to the ice. And now, for the Tampa Bay Lightning’s next play. It has to keep him here. Stamkos, and his teammates, were at Amalie for a final time Wednesday, packing up, cleaning out, dealing…

Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup; the Lightning did not lose it

in Sports/Top Headlines by

On Thursday, Chicago will have a parade to honor their Stanley Cup champions. Friday would have been a good day to do that in Tampa, but the Blackhawks ruined that plan. It was the second-best season in the history of the team, and yet they finished second…

Perhaps they were only the second best team in hockey. For whatever reason, a season died Monday night. For the first time in 270 days, there is no tomorrow. For the first time in 108 games, they have run out of time. It all ended for the Tampa Bay Lightning…

Isn’t it time Steven Stamkos was a threat again?

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Once, he was feared. Once, he was dangerous. Once, he made goaltenders nervous and kept coaches up at night. Once, he was Steven Stamkos. Lately, not so much. It has been a very long time since Stamkos was a threat. At this point, no one is sure he can still lift his arms in celebration. Stamkos has not scored for the Tampa Bay Lightning since May. That blistering shot of his has been AWOL for eight straight games now. At a…

Ben Bishop collides with Victor Hedman, Lightning reel

in Sports/Top Headlines by

TAMPA He was the last guy on the ice that Ben Bishop was worried about. After all, he is one of the good guys. Most nights, Bishop has no greater ally on the Tampa Bay Lightning than Victor Hedman, the big defenseman of the Lightning. Most nights, he’s the guy who clears out trouble. But this time, it was Hedman who was bearing down on Bishop. He did not see him, and he could not hear him as Bishop yelled.…
