The outlook for Florida children looks grim

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Florida ranks 37th in the nation for child well-being. The latest KIDS COUNT Index moved Florida up one spot from 2014, but the data compiled shows there is still much to do – especially for minority children and those living in poverty. The data ranks Florida 45th in economic well-being, 27th in education, 38th in health, 34th in family and community. Even in the state’s most positive area, Florida is still worse off for kids than more than half the…

What happens when a child’s identity is stolen?

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Welcome to another installation of “my bad luck is your source for information!” About six months ago, I reported my identity had been used by someone somewhere to file an unemployment claim. I was lucky. All it took were a handful of phone calls, a few hours and some mildly aggravating music-on-hold in order to sort the matter out. But just because the thief hadn’t accessed any of my financial information, that didn’t mean I was in the clear. Bank…

Dan Gelber: No Floridian was safe this legislative session, no man, woman, or child

in Statewide by

In his final video message from Tallahassee, State Sen. Dan Gelber describes the 2010 legislative session in one word: horrible. No Floridian was safe this legislative session, no man, woman, or child. The legislature veered hard to the right, moving even farther out of step with Floridians. While the unemployment rate reached an all time high…

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

I imagine somewhere in the Fraternal Order of Police’s mission statement it probably says something about the organization and its members being dedicated to, you know, keeping people safe. Especially children. Especially children from abusive parents. In fact, on its website, it states that the FOP’s job is “to promote and foster the impartial enforcement of law and order.” It just makes sense: the police are the ‘good guys’ who arrest the ‘bad guys’ who hurt children. What I doubt…

Pinellas woman arrested after her children ‘steal’ $12 in McDonald’s Happy Meal toys – kept in jail for 12 days before released

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Pinellas County does not have a jail. Pinellas County has a debtors’ prison. Before I explain why, let me be clear, Yvonne Maafu is not an angel. She’s got a criminal record. She’s been to jail before. She very well may end up in jail again. But there’s no excuse for what’s happened to her over the last two weeks. On January 10, Maafu was arrested by the Largo Police at her home for retail theft. She was booked into…
