Rick Scott calls for widespread pay raises for corrections officers

Gov. Rick Scott is looking to give Florida corrections officers a pay raise, including $38 million for the state’s prison system in his proposed budget. Transgender woman sues state prisons agency

A transgender woman, currently held in a men’s prison, is suing the state Department of Corrections for denying her “hormone therapy and other medically necessary treatment.” The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, which is representing Reiyn (pronounced “rain”) Keohane, filed suit on her behalf Monday in federal court in Tallahassee. The complaint says the state is violating her constitutional right against cruel and unusual punishments. Florida’s prisons are understaffed, lack adequate prison programs, have deteriorating facilities and fences and have a high turnover rate that’s led to inexperienced officers being responsible for some of the most important duties, according to a report that sheds an unflattering light on the Department of Corrections.
