Today on Context Florida: Lenny Curry, Big Sugar, free parking and standardized test fail

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today on Context Florida: Bob Sparks says Lenny Curry’s victory in Jacksonville last night shows Republicans the way to win. The political class is analyzing whether Curry’s win gives Republicans any advantage next year in the quest to capture Florida’s 29 electoral votes or to hold a U.S. Senate seat. Since Jacksonville and Duval County usually go Republican (Barack Obama lost this area twice), a Democrat winning twice in non-presidential election years would certainly give the GOP some cause for concern.…

Diane Roberts: Florida’s presidential hopefuls a bumper crop of crazy

in Top Headlines by

No fewer than four of the 2016 Republican candidates for president claim domicile in Florida. Five, if you count Donald Trump – and the head pelt-sporting Birther would hate not to be counted. Even if he’s not really running, just promoting his new book. First there’s Jeb Bush, Miami resident, former governor, brother of the more famous (and far stupider) George W., fundraising juggernaut, part-time “Hispanic,” the “moderate” supposedly beloved of the Republican establishment. Over the weekend, Jeb gave the…

Today on Context Florida: stupid & evil, environmentalists, judicial campaigns and voter choice

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today on Context Florida: Diane Roberts asks which is worse: stupid and evil, or smart and evil. It’s a thought experiment: you can apply it to, say, George W. and Jeb Bush, Rick Scott and Adam Putnam, the Florida House, etc. They don’t deserve to be in the same paragraph as the word “thought,” she says. As Bruce Ritchie was sitting in the press gallery looking down into the darkened Senate chambers on the last day of the 2015 Legislative Session,…

OCCUPIED TALLAHASSEE – Which is worse: stupid and evil or smart and evil? It’s a thought experiment: you can apply it to, say, George W. and Jeb Bush, Rick Scott and Adam Putnam, the Florida House and – Jesus, those idiots don’t deserve to be in the same paragraph as the word “thought.” But while we’re on the unavoidable subject of stupid: remember the amendment to the state constitution passed by an overwhelming margin last year? You probably voted for…

Today on Context Florida: The annual Harlot Show and Prostitution Expo – commonly called the Florida Legislative Session – has been such a wowsa so far, Diane Roberts says that we have neglected to pay sufficient attention to the mack daddy in the Mansion. You know, Rick Scott. He’s not governing; he has people for that. He’s running for the United States Senate. William Mattox writes of an innovative new policy adopted by Florida legislators last year called Personal Learning Scholarship…

Today on Context Florida: Adoptions, what you think, Hillary Clinton and real estate law

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today on Context Florida: More than 600 children woke up without a permanent home to call their own, says Jason Brodeur, who himself is a child of adoptive parents. That is why he authored legislation to make Florida the best state for adoptions – particularly adoptions benefiting foster children. When it comes to helping children, he adds, let us check rigid ideologies at the door – all of them. The poor? The hell with them. Education? Don’t make me laugh. The…

Legislators, ignore the Death Mermaid at your peril

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

OCCUPIED TALLAHASSEE–When the Death Mermaid shows up, pay attention. Back in 1881, she appeared to Hamilton Disston, warning him against trying to drain the Everglades. Old Ham, never the most emotionally stable of multimillionaires, shut his eyes tight and swore on his mother’s grave he’d stop drinking cologne. In 1969, she scared the feds into killing the Everglades Jetport, a project beloved of South Florida Democrats. It would have been the largest airport in the world and bang in the…
