Onetime TBX foe Guido Maniscalco digging the new vibe from FDOT

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

When the Hillsborough County Metropolitan Planning Organization first voted on the Tampa Bay Express project two years ago, Tampa City Councilman Guido Maniscalco was the lone member to oppose the proposal. Since that time, he’s been an unrelenting critic of the Florida Department of Transportation’s plan to add the toll lanes that would impact the neighborhoods of Seminole Heights, Tampa Heights and V.M. Ybor. What a difference a reboot makes.

FDOT thinks future plans may move toll lanes from I-275 to I-75

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

One of the most controversial elements of the Florida Department of Transportation’s now aborted $6 billion Tampa Bay Express (TBX) project was that it would have put toll lanes on parts of I-275 between downtown Tampa and Pinellas County. TBX is now history, though elements of it remain alive. But FDOT officials insist they have an open mind about what they will do now that they have evolved the project into Tampa Bay Next, which is “looking at everything in…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

For the third year in a row, the Hillsborough County Metropolitan Planning Organization voted to maintain what is now known as the Tampa Bay Next (TBN) project, despite dozens of citizens who told them that they should remove the plan from the MPO’s Transportation Improvement Project (TIP). Rene Garcia: ‘The people of Miami-Dade County … cannot wait any longer’ for signature bridge

in Statewide by

Sen. Rene Garcia is weighing in on a multi-million dollar bridge project planned for South Florida, telling the Florida Department of Transportation that the Miami-Dade community can’t wait any longer. In a letter to FDOT Secretary Rachel Cone this week, Garcia said he was confident the procurement process established by the state transportation agency “followed the spirit and the letter of the law put forth by the 2013 settlement agreement between the city of Miami and the state.” His letter…

Tampa Bay Next begins rocky road to consensus

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A reinvention of the transportation project formerly known as TBX began Wednesday night. A crowd of approximately 150 people from Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties gathered at the Bryan Glazer Jewish Community Center in West Tampa for the grand opening of Tampa Bay Next, the new name for what continues to essentially be the same project — the Tampa Bay Express, the $6 billion plan from the Florida Department of Transportation whose most contentious feature included 90 miles of toll…

Joe Henderson: FDOT’s Tampa Bay transit plan has new name, but really needs new ideas

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Transportation issues in the Tampa Bay area have been well-documented and they will get worse before they get better — assuming, of course, “better” ever comes. The Florida Department of Transportation wanted to attack the problem with a plan called Tampa Bay Express, or TBX. I’ll simplify: It called for building more roads, including 90 miles of highway people would have to pay tolls to use. A lot of people hated that idea and they raised such a ruckus that…
