Rays trade Matt Moore to Giants for three players including Matt Duffy

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Rays have an opening in their rotation. The Rays moved starting pitcher Matt Moore and his large contract to San Francisco, getting three players in return. Coming to Tampa Bay will be infielder Matt Duffy and minor league shortstop Lucius Fox. The Rays get Duffy, a lifetime .281 hitter (hitting .253 this season). Except for that, they kept to their blueprint and tried to improve their farm system. Also, the Rays sent outfielder/first baseman Steve Pierce back to Baltimore, where he played in previous seasons,…

A’s Danny Valencia cranks three homers to beat Rays

There are nights you blown out. There are nights that slip away on a late error. They are nights when an umpire’s call goes the wrong way or a ball bounces strangely or a fly ball is lost in the sun. Then there are days such as Sunday, when the Tampa Bay Rays lost an especially painful game to the Oakland A’s. Danny Valencia hit three home runs to lead the A’s to a 7-6 comeback win over the Rays,…

Perhaps that’s why Sunday was a bit of fun for the Rays, who rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-6. The Rays are now 2-62 when trailing after eight innings, and they have now won their second walkoff victory of the season. Baltimore had seemingly…

The Tampa Bay Rays fumbled away one of their more memorable comebacks Wednesday afternoon. The Rays fell behind 5-0 in the first inning, then fought their way back to a tie to force extra innings against the Chicago White Sox. However, a walk by Brad Boxberger to Avisail Garcia brought the winning run home in the bottom of the 10th. Adam Eaton had singled to start the inning, then stole second and took third when the throw bounced off shortstop…

Jake Odorizzi returns as Rays shut down Astros once again

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Well, welcome back, Jake. Jake Odorizzi gave the Tampa Bay Rays a shot in the arm Saturday afternoon. He returned to the mound for the first time since June 5, when he left with tightness in his left oblique, but didn’t look as if he had been gone at all. He allowed only two hits in his 5 ½ innings and struck out five in a 3-0 victory over the Houston Astros. For the second straight night, the 1-2-3 reliever…

Rays’ pitching leads them to 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros

in Sports/Top Headlines by

They didn’t hit it often. They didn’t score until late. But the Tampa Bay Rays eased their wounds Friday night, getting a 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros as they began their final road trip before the all-star game. Tampa Bay had only four hits, and it didn’t score until the seventh inning. But on a night when the Rays ended 18 games of torture – a 3-15 record – it was enough. Erasmo Ramirez ran his record to 8-3,…
