Save Southern Heritage files lawsuit to keep Confederate monument in Tampa

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The organization arguing loudest that the Hillsborough County Commission not remove a controversial Confederate monument from in front of the county courthouse in Tampa has filed a lawsuit to keep the statue in its current location. Save Southern Heritage, along with Veterans Monuments of America and five other individuals, filed a suit in Hillsborough Circuit Court on Friday afternoon. They claim the decision to move the statute is unconstitutional. The defendants are Hillsborough County, the Hillsborough County Commission and the County…

Joe Henderson: Hillsborough commissioners get their answer: Move the damn monument

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

If Hillsborough County commissioners were looking to the community for guidance about the Confederate war monument that has been so much in the news lately, even the oft-tone deaf representatives couldn’t fail to hear what was being shouted: Move the damn thing.

Joe Henderson: Hillsborough Confederate monument controversy isn’t going away

in Statewide/The Bay and the 'Burg by

The four Hillsborough County commissioners who voted to keep a Confederate monument on public grounds may have thought/hoped the issue was behind them. If so, they are mistaken. That much was clear from Tuesday’s rally in downtown Tampa by a coalition of leaders, clergy and people who are just plain fed up with the divide the monument has created in the community. That divide can only be closed when the monument is more to a more appropriate location. Commissioner Pat…

Joe Henderson: Hillsborough commissioners vote to preserve history, but what kind?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

I’m still waiting for anyone who can find real nobility in the slaughter we euphemistically call the Civil War. War, by its nature, is anything but civil. More importantly, what was so noble about the bloody conflict that four Hillsborough County Commissioners felt it was worth preserving a monument to a time where racial strife tore the nation apart. What are they honoring? Southern history? The war was fought over the South’s insistence on holding on to slavery. Look it…

Joe Henderson: We already term limits. They’re called ‘elections’

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

I am not a fan of term limits. I understand the argument from those who say we need a law that limits the power of incumbency. They say the longer a politician stays in office, the more likely they are to accumulate so much recognition and money that it becomes almost impossible to beat them. What they’re really saying is that voters need protection from themselves. I have a problem with that because it still comes down to this basic…

Joe Henderson: Democrats may finally get the message that they need, well, a message

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Florida Democrats have become such a non-factor in state politics that the real drama frequently becomes which faction of the Republican party will prevail on a given issue. Think about it. We have had knockdown, drag-outs between the GOP-controlled House and Senate. This year the main event has been the ongoing feud between Republican Gov. Rick Scott and House Speaker Richard Corcoran. It’s almost like Democrats don’t exist. Republicans have long had a consistent message of tough on crime, lower…

Joe Henderson: Look for Pat Kemp to turn Hillsborough Commission on its ear

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Pat Kemp officially joined the Hillsborough County Commission when she was sworn into office Wednesday. If she stays true to her nature – and there is no to believe she won’t – Kemp might just turn the Commission on its ear. I hope she does. Most politicians like to play it safe and tell voters what they want to hear. Pat Kemp’s style is to tell what she believes they need to hear. Get used to it. Running for a…
