Tampa Democratic political establishment says it will unite to defeat Jackie Toledo in District 6 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Although you would think that winning a primary election by 17 percentage points would make Jackie Toledo the prohibitive favorite going into the March 24 runoff Tampa City Council District 6 contest, there wasn’t a soul at Montauro’s restaurant in West Tampa Tuesday night who believed that. Certainly not after they heard a series of verbal attacks against the 38-year-old chemical engineer who nearly won the seat outright, getting 46 percent of the vote to second-place finisher Guido Maniscalco’s 29…

Jackie Toledo, Guido Maniscalco to run off in Tampa City Council District 6 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

As Mayor Bob Buckhorn cruises to easy re-election victory, facing only a write-in candidate, one Tampa municipal race has brought at least a modicum of drama, despite lower than expected turnout numbers. In the Tampa City Council District 6 contest — a guaranteed new face on the board — civil engineer Jackie Toledo will face jeweler Guido Maniscalco in a March 24 runoff. District 6 represents West Tampa and some of South Tampa. Toledo led in the three-way race with 46 percent, but it was not…

Tampa voters voice their opinions on Election Day

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It is Election Day here in Tampa, and while the news so far today has been about the lackluster turnout, registered voters who have taken the time to vote certainly have opinions about some of the folks on the ballot. It wasn’t exactly bustling at the Seminole Heights Garden Center located on Central Avenue. While one poll worker at noon told us that she had seen about 30 voters come to the polls during the morning, the fact that a reporter was…

Voter turnout so far is at just 10.38 percent and is on track to be less than 12 percent. That would make…

Mitch Perry Report for 3.3.15 — Democracy now in Tampa

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The most lackluster campaign that this reporter has covered in his 15 years living in Tampa comes to a conclusion tonight — at least for most of the candidates vying to win the five Tampa City Council seats up for election. There is really not much drama at stake. Though there has been a lot of coverage of the District 6 campaign between Republican Jackie Toledo, Democrat Guido Maniscalco and independent Tommy Castellano, it’s been about relatively trivial matters involving…

Guido Maniscalco said this afternoon that Jackie Toledo, one of his two opponents in this Tuesday’s Tampa District 6 City Council election, needs to be honest with voters regarding published reports about a mailer sent out by a political action committee with connections to her campaign. The Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Danielson reports that that Anthony Pedicini, Toledo’s campaign manager, has a relationship with Auston Molina, the man identified as being involved with Moving Tampa Forward, a political action commiteee responsible for…

Bob Buckhorn ready to party on Election Night

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

What a difference four years make. On March 1, 2011, Bob Buckhorn and his supporters crammed into JJ’s Cafe and Bar in Ybor City, fingers crossed, hoping he would make it into the run-off election three weeks later. He did, barely, getting 384 more votes than Dick Greco. Flash forward three weeks later, and Buckhorn held his victory night party in the much more spacious Channelside Bay Plaza, where he celebrated his trouncing of Rose Ferlita with hundreds of supporters.…
