Medical marijuana advocates push towards ballot initiative for 2016

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Stymied by legislative inaction and thwarted by legal challengers, medical marijuana supporters are taking it to the streets. People United for Medical Marijuana and United for Care have begun collecting signatures and raising money to get a constitutional initiative on the November 2016 ballot allowing doctors to use marijuana to treat sick people. A spokesperson says they are confident voters will pass what the Legislature failed to do and the campaign will become more visible starting this month. “Until this…

With House adjourning, United for Care says its going to 2016 ballot

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The Florida House has adjourned sine die, meaning it is abandoning the legislative session three days early and leaving a host of unresolved issues on the table. Among those issues is medical marijuana, which has been left dead for 2015. “Today the people we elected to represent us in Tallahassee literally abdicated their responsibility to Floridians. The House of Representatives decided to simply quit work, three days before the end of session, and with that, medical marijuana legislation is dead in Tallahassee,”…

If votes had equaled petitions, medical marijuana would have passed

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

When does voting really matter? For all of the super-voters out there, the answer is, “It always does.” But for those not so attuned with voting in every election, here’s a more compelling reason. If all of the voters who had signed a petition supporting placing Florida’s Amendment 2 medical marijuana initiative on the 2014 ballot had voted “Yes,” the amendment would have passed. A third of the money came from Alachua resident Michael Singer, a medical software developer and author. Although contributions have increased over February numbers, since the new year the committee only…

Today on Context Florida: John Morgan, Obamacare, student privacy and sexual assault

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today on Context Florida: John Morgan is a serious person, says Peter Schorsch. He certainly spent serious money trying to pass Amendment 2 in 2014. He sounds serious, sometimes even emphatic. And sometimes sounding serious is all one needs to get their friends and enemies to act the way they want them too. At least that is what Morgan hopes. Obamacare covers 16 million but an additional 32 million remain unprotected, writes Marc Yacht. Although it addresses insurer abuses such as…

Mitch Perry Report for 3.18.15 — No DWS, no problem. Right, Dems?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Debbie Wasserman Schultz will not be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate next year, but hopefully that doesn’t “pave the way” for fellow South Florida Democratic U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy to become the groomed nominee in 2016. As a Tampa Bay-based political reporter, I have to admit knowing very little about Congressman Murphy — his philosophy, his temperament. Hell, even his voting record. Yes, there’s plenty of time to find out, but the Democratic Party really has to…
