Hillsborough won’t officially recognize Pulse shooting anniversary, disappointing some

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Monday, June 12, will be one year since the mass shooting of 49 people at the popular Pulse LGBTQ nightclub in Orlando. Less than 48 hours after that horrific night, Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner, County Administrator Mike Merrill, and a handful of Hillsborough County sheriff deputies participated in an event in Ybor City honoring the victims. At their next meeting, Commissioners supported Beckner’s motion to raise an LGBT Pride flag at the County Center for the remainder of June, also in honor of the victims.…

Elvis Pigott says he’s the fresh new face that the Hillsborough Commission desperately needs

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

If elected to the Hillsborough County Commission next year, Elvis Pigott would become the first millennial — Americans under the age of 35, as recently defined — to serve on the board. The 29-year-old Riverview resident has filed to run for the countywide District 5, which becomes vacant next year after GOP incumbent Ken Hagan term-limits out. But Hagan hopes to stick around for another eight years, having filed to run for the North Tampa District 2 seat currently held by fellow Republican But…

Hillsborough Citizen Advisory Committee proposes $3B budget savings, possibly spent on transportation

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A new report issued by the Hillsborough County Citizens Advisory Committee identified potential savings in 14 specific areas could save more than $3 billion over the next three decades, which could be spent on transportation, infrastructure and/or tax cuts. The 13-member committee has met twice a month since July analyzing the budget before handing off its list of recommendations to the BOCC last week. “We determined you don’t have to have a sales tax to raise this amount of money,” says Spencer Kass, a member…

Can Les Miller and his BOCC colleagues find a way to begin to adequately fund HART?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

In 2017, talk has been more than ever about the lack of transportation options in Hillsborough County and the greater Tampa Bay region. The Board of Hillsborough County Commissioners is finally investing in improving roads and bridges to the tune of more than $800 million, with just one percent of those funds allocated toward public transit. In an interview earlier this week with HART CEO Katharine Eagan and the board’s relatively new chairman, Les Miller, the two expressed their hopes and dreams for…

Republican David Wilson considers a run for Hillsborough Commission in 2018

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

After Hillsborough County Commissioner Al Higginbotham announced last week that he won’t run for re-election next year, several names have been floated as potential candidates on both sides of the aisle for the countywide District 7 seat, including Tom Aderhold, Janet Cruz, Tim Schock, and Kevin Beckner.  Along with those likely suspects, there will undoubtedly be some individuals who’ve never ran for office before in the mix, and one of them could be David Wilson. Wilson is a Valrico-based commercial real estate sales associate and a…

Al Higginbotham focuses on his priorities in his last two years in office

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Al Higginbotham says that while he feels he’s still in relatively good health, the time is right to step down next year from public office. The 62-year-old District 7 County Commissioner spoke with FloridaPolitics.com Friday afternoon, a day after announcing that he won’t run for re-election in 2018. Saying that his “body time is on a different time clock,” Higginbotham acknowledges that his decision stems in part because of the attendant health issues related to his 1995 hunting accident that left him partially paralyzed.…

Kevin Beckner is open to running for local (and maybe state) office in 2018

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Kevin Beckner has moved on since a disappointing loss to Pat Frank in the Democratic primary for Hillsborough County Clerk of the Court. Beckner says he is currently studying to get his license to sell real estate in Florida. But he also acknowledges another run for political office isn’t out of the realm of possibility — and could come possibly as early as next year. When asked if he was considering a run against Al Higginbotham in the countywide District 7 race,…
