Gator could be top pick in MLB draft

in Sports/Top Headlines by

On Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Eastern, Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred will stroll to the podium to announce the first pick of the 2016 draft. After that, little is certain. The state of Florida is often good for as many as five or six first round selections. This year perhaps only two players will be top 25 selections and perhaps only two more will be taken in the first round. A consensus does not yet exist for the top…

Condolences this morning to St. Pete Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin, who lost her husband, Tampa Bay Times outdoor reporter Terry Tomalin. Condolences to all who knew and loved him. Moving on, the documentary “Weiner” is set to open today in some markets around the country (though not Tampa, though wouldn’t it be great if the Tampa Theatre folks could get it down here?). Florida State cornerback Jalen Ramsey was in the top five in nearly all mock drafts and his selection by the Jacksonville Jaguars at number five was well received.…

Cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey of Florida State and Florida’s Vernon Hargreaves III from Tampa are well known to most college football fans. Both are certain to go among the top dozen picks with Ramsey poised to be among the top three. Another projected top five pick is Ohio State defensive end…

Ole Miss rides Cowboys in Sugar Bowl

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Like the other five “New Year’s 6” bowls, the Sugar Bowl resulted in a knockout rather than a decision. Playing inspired football, the Mississippi Rebels steamrolled Oklahoma State 48-20 on Friday in New Orleans. The Rebels scored early and often to decide the contest early. Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly was on target to eight different receivers, generating four touchdown passes. The nephew of former Miami Hurricanes’ and Buffalo Bills’ quarterback Jim Kelly also ran for 73 yards. It started…
