Last month, the Tampa City Council gave its approval to Mayor Bob Buckhorn’s proposal for a $251 million drainage improvement program. T he new fee starts at $45 per year for the owner of a medium-sized home, ultimately rising to $89.55 annually after six years. The tax will be higher with those with bigger homes, and less with those with smaller homes and less pavement. Businesses will also pay the fee. Here’s where sh*t stands in Tampa Bay politics — the ‘it’s October’ edition

in Peter by

Hello, October. This is the final full month of the 2016 campaign cycle. In five weeks, we will know so much more about the future of the country, the state and our communities. But, no matter what, life will go on. For those in “The Process” — Florida Politics’ term for the unending legislative campaign/legislative session system — it’s just two months before committee meetings begin. In fact, like many people I talk to who are in “The Process,” we’re planning for the 2017…

in The Bay and the 'Burg by
Shawn Harrison

La Gaceta, Tampa’s trilingual weekly newspaper, has endorsed incumbent Shawn Harrison in the state House District 63 race. Harrison, a one-term Republican, faces Democrat Lisa Montelione in the November general election. The area, which includes New Tampa, has been a swing district. An editorial in the newspaper — publishing articles in English, Spanish and Italian — said that “normally, we support Democrats, but lately we’ve noticed some Democrats aren’t acting like Democrats. Lisa Montelione is on that list.” Publisher Patrick Manteiga is also a Democratic political…

Mitch Perry Report for 9.19.16 — Jeffrey Toobin’s book on Patty Hearst is another American true-crime classic

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Last night in Los Angeles, one of the big winners at the Emmy Awards was the FX production of “The People vs. O.J. Simpson.” Though most of the American public was quite familiar with the O.J. saga that unfolded in 1994-1995, the series was compelling, must-see drama (too bad John Travolta’s positively weird performance as Robert Shapiro didn’t get rewarded), but it shouldn’t be underestimated that its main source material was New Yorker journalist Jeffrey Toobin’s book, “The Run of His Life: The People v.…

Tampa Bay state House candidates grade Rick Scott after nearly 6 years in office

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Two Tampa House Democratic candidates offered some rare praise for Gov. Rick Scott on Friday — before ultimately giving him a barely passing grade (depending on grading policy at the school you attended) at the Tampa Tiger Bay Club forum on Friday. “I will tell you one of the positives of the Rick Scott administration was the mindset that he came into office with, and that is to make government smarter,” said Tampa land use and zoning attorney David Singer, running in the House District…

Shawn Harrison and Lisa Montelione clash on education issues at Tampa Tiger Bay Forum

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The House District 63 race between Republican incumbent Shawn Harrison and Democratic challenger Lisa Montelione is expected to be one of the most competitive in Florida this fall. The North Hillsborough County swing district — which includes much of New Tampa, Forest Hills, North Tampa and the USF community — has flipped back and forth over the past three election cycles, with Harrison taking it in 2010 and 2014, and Democrat Mark Danish winning it in 2012. At Friday’s Tiger Bay meeting, the two squared off for the first…
