Wistful memories of Tampa Trib that no wrecking ball can change

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The final demolition of the venerable Tampa Tribune building has begun. Workers began taking down the grand old downtown structure on Parker Street along the Hillsborough River, with plans to replace it with an eight-story apartment building. Forgive, please, my momentary wistful pause. The Trib was my work home for nearly 42 years until the company was bought and immediately shuttered by our blood rival, the Tampa Bay Times. I was in that building on the day it opened, Oct.…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A Hillsborough woman says she was defamed by two “completely false” television reports and has filed suit against Media General, owner of WFLA Channel 8, and one of its reporters. Erisan Seibert is also claiming that TV reporter Shannon Behnken invaded her privacy by, among other things, “intentionally and without authorization” intruding upon and invading her private living space. 5 things I think about today’s St. Petersburg Times

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

The only thing better than if the courtroom in which the St. Petersburg Times is squaring off against the City of St. Petersburg today over the city’s ban on street-side solicitations collapses, would be if Media General joined the lawsuit and the courtroom collapses with their lawyers in it as well. That is a possibility, albeit far-removed, now that Media General, the parent company of the Tampa Tribune, filed a motion in federal court Wednesday to support the Times Publishing Company’s attempt to halt…

No surprises from local newspapers: St. Pete Times plans to syndicate PolitiFact, Tribune sees ad revenues firming

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Two blurbs about the local newspapers come as no surprise. First, The St. Petersburg Times’ Pulitzer Prize-winning Politifact project is reportedly about to announce a syndication deal with several newspapers. Politico.com reports that the fact-checking site, which drew accolades for its work during the 2008 campaign — as well as the 2009 Pulitzer for national reporting — has continued to demonstrate its fact-checking skills well beyond the presidential race. “The intensity of the campaign really didn’t end,” Times Washington, D.C.,…
