Alabama’s Jake Coker will do what’s needed to win

in Sports by

Alabama quarterback Jake Coker has seen a lot since he left St. Paul’s Episcopal School in Mobile, Alabama. He was not heavily recruited, but received a scholarship offer from Florida State University after Jimbo Fisher saw his skills. Though Alabama finally offered Coker a scholarship late in the recruiting process, he enrolled at FSU. Coker saw a lot of the bench during his two years in Tallahassee. Other quarterbacks either on the roster or redshirting were E.J. Manuel, Clint Trickett,…

Alabama hires Jeremy Pruitt as defensive coordinator

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Alabama has hired Jeremy Pruitt as defensive coordinator after he had that role at Georgia and Florida State. On Friday, Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban announced hiring the former Alabama assistant. Pruitt was on Mark Richt‘s staff at Georgia and fills the vacancy created when Kirby Smart became coach of the Bulldogs. “He did an outstanding job in the six years he was with us and did the same at Florida State and Georgia after that,” Saban said in a…

Jimbo Fisher: No. 14 Florida State, No. 10 Florida very similar

in Sports/Top Headlines by

As Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher prepares for Saturday’s game against No. 10 Florida, he sees a mirror image of his own squad. “It’s funny how that evolves. That wasn’t planned, I promise you, by either one of us,” Fisher said on Monday. “One of the key roles as a coach is identifying who you are and what each team is. And (Florida coach Jim McElwain has) done a great job of that. “It’s ironic that we are very similar,…

The Bulldogs look to knock Alabama out of the national championship picture while throwing the SEC Western Division into total chaos. A victory by Alabama would leave them in the driver’s seat. The size…

Miami: One city, but a tale of two coaches

in Sports/Top Headlines by

If you are a football coach and your team plays its games at Miami’s Sun Life Stadium, these are not the best of days. To be blunt, neither Miami’s tradition-rich NFL team nor the iconic college program is satisfying their rooters. With apologies to Charles Dickens, Miami is one city presenting us with a tale of two coaches. With the Miami Hurricanes’ loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats on Thursday, the heat index will intensify under Coach Al Golden. Air traffic…

Big 10, SEC and ACC the top stories of AP Top 25 Poll

in Sports/Top Headlines by

To no one’s surprise, Ohio State remains the Number 1 team in the nation. The AP Top 25, voted on by the media, made it an all-Big 10 top two with Michigan State taking the second spot. The AP voters clearly demonstrate the media view that the SEC is miles ahead of any other conference.  The ACC, on the other hand, continues to play the role of Rodney Dangerfield. Mississippi’s rise to Number 3 (tied with TCU) is reminiscent of…

College football top 10 to look different after Saturday upsets

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Will week 3 in college football be remembered as having an impact on the national championship picture? That is entirely possible because history repeated itself from 2014 and an odds-on favorite to make football’s Final Four will likely lose some support when polls come out. For the second year in a row, #15 Mississippi took down #2 Alabama; this time on the Crimson Tide’s home field. The Rebels’ 43-37 upset in Tuscaloosa is their second consecutive win over Alabama and…
