The GOP-controlled House of Representatives passed two immigration-related bills Thursday afternoon. One was Kate’s Law, which mandates a minimum five-year prison sentence for anyone who re-enters the country illegally at least twice after being deported. It passed the House of Representatives on Thursday with a vote of 257 to 157. The No Sanctuary for Criminals Act passed by a 228-195 margin. Both votes were mostly along party lines, but not in Florida. Only seven Republicans voted against the No Sanctuary for…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Although Bob Buckhorn isn’t likely to sign onto a Sierra Club pledge putting Tampa on record as attempting a 100 clean energy portfolio by a certain year, his administration says he’s doing plenty to combat the negative implications of climate change on the city. Buckhorn did join St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman in signing on to a group of over 300 mayors earlier this month who say they intend to fully the intended mission of the Paris Climate agreement, which President Trump…

President Donald Trump told a crowd in Miami Friday he was keeping a campaign promise to roll back the “terrible and misleading deal” the Obama administration made with the Castro government in Cuba in 2014. Two hours later, U.S. Representative Kathy Castor told reporters that the work of engaging the Tampa Bay area and the communist island will continue. “I think President Trump’s new policy is regrettable and it takes us backward, because what it will do will really complicate our neighbor’s ability to…

in 2017/Statewide by

That was a 13 percent increase from the year before, much of it attributable to relaxed travel rules between Cuba and the United States. That might change if President Trump, as expected, rolls back many of the liberalized policy changes from then-President Barack Obama toward Cuba. If that happens, consider it a nod from Trump to Marco Rubio, Florida’s junior U.S.…

David Jolly fully intends to appear on “Real Time with Bill Maher” Friday night, as do previously scheduled guests Ice Cube and Symone Sanders, the former national press secretary for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
