First U.S. cruise in decades arrives in Havana

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

The first U.S. cruise ship in nearly 40 years crossed the Florida Straits from Miami and docked in Havana on Monday, restarting commercial travel on waters that served as a stage for a half-century of Cold War hostility. Carnival Cruise Line’s Adonia became the first U.S. cruise ship in Havana since President Jimmy Carter eliminated virtually all restrictions of U.S. travel to Cuba in the late 1970s. Travel limits were restored after Carter left office and U.S. cruises to Cuba only become possible again…

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Being a descendant of Cuban exiles, it’s no surprise that Carlos Lopez-Cantera takes a dim view of President Barack Obama’s rapprochement with the Raul Castro-led government. “They’ve figured out our political system. They’ve seen how our political system works,” the Lieutenant Governor and U.S. Senate candidate said in a speech at the Tampa Economic Club on Monday. Bob Sparks says the Republican establishment is facing a serious quandary; essentially…

Some objected to the president choosing to hang with Raul Castro while watching that historical baseball game in Havana between the Rays and the Cuban national team. They note that he devoted less than a minute to Brussels in his 34-minute speech on Tuesday morning. Some thought it in poor taste when he…

Kathy Castor says that business community is key to inspiring Republicans to end the embargo against Cuba

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

President Obama spent his first full day in Cuba on Monday, where he met earlier in the day with Cuban President Raul Castro. After their historic meeting,  Castro said his country remained committed to normalizing relations but reiterated that it could only happen if Congress ends a decades-old economic blockade. The blockade, Castro said, is “the most outstanding obstacle to our economic development.” There is a bill to end the U.S. sanctions on Cuba, and it’s sponsored by Tampa Democratic Representative Kathy Castor.…
