On Friday, Gov. Rick Scott named two to the Governing Board of the Southwest Florida Water Management District. Joel Schleicher, 65, of Sarasota, is the founder and executive chair of Focal Point Data Risk, a risk-management firm based in Tampa. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota. Schleicher fills a vacant seat for a term ending March 1, 2019. Rebecca Smith, 57, is the president and chief executive officer for the A.D. Morgan Corporation, a Tampa-based construction…

Jackie Toledo easily defeats David Singer in House District 60 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Republican Jackie Toledo has defeated Democrat David Singer in the House District 60 race, 57 percent to 43 percent. The 40-year-old Toledo ran an intriguing race, choosing to eschew any interviews and (mostly) ignoring the verbal slings and arrows from Singer, who ran a centrist campaign with a strong pitch to independents and moderate Republicans. Toledo barely edged out Rebecca Smith in the primary, but had no problem in dispensing of Singer, who ran an aggressive campaign, consistently trying to tie Toledo’s policies to…

What to make of House candidate Jackie Toledo?

in Peter/Top Headlines by

Jackie Toledo, the oft-controversial Republican running for Florida House District 60, has a major fundraiser planned for Tuesday. And while the invitation for the event is studded with dozens of local Republican heavyweights, I’m still not sure what to make of Toledo. Is she, as I want to believe, the latest in a line of Hillsborough Republican female pols who were initially underestimated by their critics and the media (think Sandy Murman during her stint in the Florida House)? Or…

Shawn Harrison and Lisa Montelione clash on education issues at Tampa Tiger Bay Forum

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The House District 63 race between Republican incumbent Shawn Harrison and Democratic challenger Lisa Montelione is expected to be one of the most competitive in Florida this fall. The North Hillsborough County swing district — which includes much of New Tampa, Forest Hills, North Tampa and the USF community — has flipped back and forth over the past three election cycles, with Harrison taking it in 2010 and 2014, and Democrat Mark Danish winning it in 2012. At Friday’s Tiger Bay meeting, the two squared off for the first…

Entire Tampa City Council comes out in support of David Singer in House District 60 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

David Singer, the South Tampa-based land use attorney now running as a Democrat in the Florida House District 60 race, has received a nice boost to his campaign by getting the endorsement of all seven members of the Tampa City Council. Singer is running against Republican Jackie Toledo in the race on Nov. 8. Toledo, a professional engineer and entrepreneur, narrowly defeated Rebecca Smith to capture the GOP nomination for the seat last week. “Electing David Singer gives our city and our community a…

David Singer compares Jackie Toledo with Donald Trump as the HD 60 general election begins

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Republican race for House District 60 was a nail-biter Tuesday night, with civil engineer Jackie Toledo getting just 246 more votes (out of 12,528 cast) than businesswoman Rebecca Smith, giving her a less than two-percentage-point victory. Smith was the clear GOP establishment favorite in the race, but obviously, not among the electorate. Toledo raised less than half the amount of her opponent, but observers in South Tampa said in terms of a ground game, Toledo and her volunteers were much more…

Jackie Toledo narrowly defeats ‘establishment favorite’ Rebecca Smith in HD 60 primary

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Jackie Toledo narrowly held off establishment favorite Rebecca Smith Tuesday in the Republican House District 60. Toledo will oppose Democrat David Singer in the November general election. Singer was unopposed in the primary. With all precincts reporting, Toledo held a 222-vote margin out of more than 12,000 votes cast. The district includes all of Davis Islands and South Tampa while extending into southern Hillsborough County and north to the Town ‘n Country area. Dana Young, who represented this Republican-leaning district,…
