After Irma, Florida Jews seek respite in High Holy Days

During Hurricane Irma, Temple Shalom served as a sanctuary of a different kind. When the storm changed course at the last minute, the Naples synagogue suddenly became an emergency shelter. As power stayed off for days, the Reform temple, which had only minimal damage, was a place for neighbors to escape the heat and have a free meal.

Whoops: Rosh Hashanah means no maps in redistricting case

A Jewish holiday is causing a delay in the filing of replacement maps in the ongoing congressional redistricting court challenge. Last week, Circuit Judge Terry Lewis gave parties in the suit until Monday to turn in their proposed versions of how to draw boundary lines for Florida’s 27 congressional districts. But Monday also is Rosh Hashanah, which began at sundown Sunday.
