Medical marijuana grower wants in on challenge to pot law

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A medical marijuana nursery is asking a Tallahassee judge to allow it to step in on a case over the state’s new law governing the drug. Canadian-based DFMMJ Investments, which inked a deal to take over operations of Chestnut Hill Tree Farm, filed a “motion to intervene” earlier this week with Circuit Judge Karen Gievers. Sarasota’s TropiFlora is asking the courts to delay the issuance of one of 10 “medical marijuana treatment center” (MMTC) licenses. The nursery has said the department “wrongfully refused” to consider…

Andrew Gillum’s terrible, horrible, no good press week

in Peter/Top Headlines by

When you are a relatively unknown candidate running in a large state like Florida, and you have neither the marquis name of your chief opponent nor the checkbook of the incumbent you are hoping to replace, it helps to get a steady stream of good press. Frankly, it’s one of the only plays you have. Good press is needed to build name identification and brand. Donors, both current and future, want to read good things about you. Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum received some possibly unsettling news this week. The Democratic candidate for governor, who has led Tallahassee since November 2014, learned that his city is the most dangerous in Florida. That dubious distinction came by way of a survey from the blog 24/7 Wall St, which reviewed data from the FBI Uniform Crime Report to identify the dangerous metropolitan area in each state. Tallahassee had 767 violent crimes for every 100,000 residents in 2015, far more than in any…

Gwen Graham’s politics molded by father, Florida life

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

One thing distinguishes Gwen Graham from other candidates (and possible candidates) for Governor — she is a hugger. Prepare to be hugged, Florida. Graham, 54, the one-term former Democratic congresswoman from Tallahassee, has little professional political experience, having run for only one election. She won that one by barely a percentage point, taking Florida’s 2nd Congressional District away from Republican U.S. Rep. Steve Southerland, only to give it up when redistricting painted her district red. Now Graham is entering a race that already…

Tallahassee seeks to end ‘roam towing,’ OKs overnight towing bans

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Tallahassee city officials are considering overnight towing bans, targeting tow trucks drivers praying on bar-goers who leave cars behind when they are too drunk to drive. According to WTSP, the push to prevent so-called “roam towing” is an idea gaining support in Florida’s Capitol. After a 10Investigates series examining the benefits of overnight towing bans in the Tampa Bay region, the Tallahassee City Commission unanimously enacted similar consumer protections. Tallahassee will now allow bar and restaurant customers to leave vehicles…
