#6 on list of Tampa Bay’s Most Powerful Politicians – Richard Corcoran

in Uncategorized by

Two-term Republican state Representative Richard Corcoran dropped one spot to #6 on the 2014 SaintPetersBlog list of Tampa Bay’s Most Powerful Politicians. Corcoran is one of the most insightful, knowledgeable and cunning names on the list. He is a real political animal — not just in Tampa Bay, but from Miami to the Panhandle — in the best of ways, as a diligent legislator devoted to the constituents of House District 37, which covers much of Pasco County.

Corcoran’s insider status is the stuff of legend. He is the former chief of staff for then-Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio, adviser for former speakers Daniel Webster and Tom Feeney, as well as the brother of prominent Tallahassee lobbyist Mike Corcoran. Even before his election to the Florida House in 2010, Corcoran possessed a deep understanding of the nuts-and-bolts of the legislative process — creating budgets, passing legislation, arranging support and votes.

Roots that run through two of the largest Florida delegations—Miami-Dade and Tampa—helped him become future Speaker Designate in 2011 for the 2017-2018 term, making him most likely to follow Steve Crisafulli, who himself succeeds Will Weatherford in 2015 (#1 on this year’s list).

A fiscal conservative, Corcoran sits on the Florida Taxation & Budget Reform Commission, and chairs both the Health & Human Services and the PPACA (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act) Select Committees.

He also serves on the Health & Human Services and Rules & Calendar committees. But more than that, Corcoran is respected by his peers and is often sought after for advice and counsel—something that is always beneficial for a representative of the Tampa Bay area.

Simply stated Richard Corcoran is a warrior. In both policy and politics he enters the battle usually already having achieved the victory. He has seen his share of defeat but has also racked up some impressive victories.  No matter which, he always remains poised and steadfast.  Many never see him coming.  But his vision extends at least ten miles down the road.  Cunning and loyal, he is true to his word and will back up promises with action.  But, he is most effective because he truly loves his role in the process and relishes the opportunity to serve the state, his party, and his colleagues- and it shows.
