Here’s a quick shot-and-chaser for St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman.
SHOT: “Kriseman outlines salaries of deputy mayor, chief of staff, other new hires” — SaintPetersBlog, 12/20/14. Ben Kirby told me that salaries will come from existing budgeted money, mostly a surplus of contingency money. People familiar with the workings of City Hall know that there are several retiring staff, and salary savings have been found to fund these positions as well.
CHASER: “St. Petersburg budget forecast predicts $2.3 million shortfall” — Tampa Bay Times, 2/13/14. A budget forecast presented to the City Council on Thursday warned that the city could end the fiscal year in September with a $2.3 million deficit. … Officials had projected the city would take in about $212.7 million in revenue for fiscal year 2014, but now believe collections will fall $1 million short.
I don’t expect that shot-and-chaser to go down very easily.
