Public Policy Polling’s newest Florida poll finds Rick Scott’s approval numbers have taken a step back in the wrong direction compared to April and now only 31% of voters give him good marks to 56% who disapprove.
Meanwhile, the liberal group MoveOn.org launched a campaign demanding that Scott drop his controversial non-citizen voter purge, calling it “the worst attack on voting rights in the country.” The group sent out an e-mail Tuesday urging its members to contact Scott’s office and ask him to stop the noncitizen voter purge.
The U.S. Department of Justice questioned the legality of the purge last week and ordered counties to stop the removal of names from the voter rolls until concerns are resolved. Florida has until tomorrow to respond to the Department of Justice.
“We have to stop Governor Scott today—he is embarrassing Florida and corrupting the electoral process. His reckless acts have local and national implications. So let’s ring his office’s phones off the hook until he stops his racially-targeted attack on voting rights,” Moveon.org organizer Garlin Gilchrist said in the e-mail.
Florida has flagged 2,700 potential noncitizen voters and sent the list to county elections supervisors, some of whom found the data and methodology to be flawed and problematic. The list of potential noncitizen voters – many of whom have turned out to be lawful citizens and voters – disproportionately hits minorities, especially Hispanics.
