College football top 10 to look different after Saturday upsets

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Will week 3 in college football be remembered as having an impact on the national championship picture? That is entirely possible because history repeated itself from 2014 and an odds-on favorite to make football’s Final Four will likely lose some support when polls come out. For the second year in a row, #15 Mississippi took down #2 Alabama; this time on the Crimson Tide’s home field. The Rebels’ 43-37 upset in Tuscaloosa is their second consecutive win over Alabama and…

FSU gets a kick (or two) out of Cason Beatty

in Sports/Top Headlines by

When the punter is awarded the game ball, your team either lost or struggled on offense, or both. Fortunately for Florida State, only one of the above was true as they managed to escape Alumni Stadium and the Boston College Eagles, 14-0. Teams normally celebrate when they gain yardage through the air in large chunks. The high-fives are lowered a bit when the player putting the ball in the air is the punter. Cason Beatty, FSU’s punter, quite simply had…

Rays look beyond 2015 for success

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Barring epic collapses by multiple teams, the Tampa Bay Rays will not be going to the post season. The loss of front-line talent and injuries kept them from making a serious run. They had some ups and downs, but received a steady hand from first-year manager Kevin Cash. Some help appears to be on the way. According to MLB.com, the Rays have five of the top 100 prospects in professional baseball. There is likely even more talent to be developed. Willy…

Bobby Bowden offers FAMU a foundation-building idea from 1981

Florida A&M’s 36-0 loss to South Carolina State on Thursday again exposed a few realities. At the top of the list is a gap in talent between the Rattlers and their first three opponents. To be successful, the level of talent does not need to equal that of FAMU legends like Bob Hayes, Willie Gallimore, Ken Riley, Glen Edwards or Hewritt Dixon. In the era of ESPN and today’s integrated universities, players of that caliber receive offers from elite Division…

Bucs, Gators seek improvement, face challenges on the road

As college football heads into its third weekend and the NFL its second, one last reflection of last weekend provides a good preview to the next. Two games are worth noting. The Debacle on Dale Mabry tops the list. The Marcus Mariota vs. Jameis Winston rematch was every bit as exciting as last May’s Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight. Unfortunately, Jameis was cast in the role formerly played by Pacquiao. In both cases, the ballyhoo far exceeded the contest.…

Colts out of Luck; Karlos Williams, Percy Harvin lead Bills to big win

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The Buffalo Bills began the Rex Ryan era in impressive fashion on Sunday with a 27-14 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. The Bills, under first-year coach Ryan, were led by quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who completed 14 of 19 passes for 195 yards and one touchdown. Taylor beat out former Florida State Seminole E.J. Manuel for the starting job. Florida State was well represented in the game anyway. In his first NFL start, running back Karlos Williams outshone his Pro Bowl…

2nd weekend of college football by the numbers

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Saturday’s action brought some significant numbers both large and small. They represent happenings both good and bad. 752 – Yards of total offense surrendered by Florida A&M against Samford in a disappointing 58-21 loss to the Bulldogs. Such heights were never reached when Jimbo Fisher or Bobby Bowden played there. 266 – Rushing yards by Florida State’s Dalvin Cook in Saturday’s win over South Florida. Cook’s outburst is the second highest by an FSU running back and the most since…
