in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Yesterday marked the 340th home dedication for Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County. A three bedroom, two bathroom house on 3rd Avenue N., in St. Petersburg, will now be home to the Engle family: Mary Anne, a local small-business owner who recently earned her U.S. citizenship, and her two teenage sons. Habitat has been operating in Pinellas County since 1985. Its homeownership program revolves around building homes with volunteer community members, then selling those homes — for no profit — to…

PSTA’s tough decision on hybrid bus purchase leads to greater tech focus

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

It wouldn’t be unreasonable to say the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority has kept up with its field’s technological trends. The PSTA boasts of a more robust hybrid bus fleet than any other public transit system in the state; all of its buses offer free Wi-Fi; and GPS trackers in each bus make it possible for riders to track their bus’ current and exact location. However, PSTA’s board of directors think they can do even better. To get there, they’ve decided to…

Better yet, who, with pets, doesn’t love to dress those little furry suckers up for Halloween and snap a few shots for the Book, or the Gram? Also, and at the risk of sounding like a…

How PSTA learned to stop worrying and love the hybrid

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Seven new hybrid diesel-electric buses will be cruising around Pinellas County next year. PSTA board members approved the purchase — which will cost the PSTA no more than $4.9 million — at their Oct. 28 meeting. It falls under the board’s long-term bus replacement strategy, which aims to replace 13 old buses per year with newer, more fiscally and environmentally sound buses. However, the decision for board members wasn’t an easy one. After holding off on the vote for two…

On the campaign trail with Fred Petty, former Pinellas tax collector and current Seminole City Council candidate

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Fred Petty‘s Pinellas County roots go deep. Back in 1967, after a 20-year career in the Navy, the now 85-year-old Petty first moved to the area. That same year he began working for the Pinellas County tax collector. Over time, Petty moved up through the ranks of the tax collector’s office and, in 1992, decided to run for the county’s official tax collector post. He won that year and  won again in 1996, ultimately serving two consecutive four year terms…
