County Commissioner Janet Long approaching $34K for re-election campaign

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Incumbent Janet Long has continued her bid for Pinellas County Commission re-election with her best month of campaign fundraising thus far. The 70-year-old Democrat and former state representative from Seminole raised exactly $11,800 in September, over $1,000 more than her previous monthly best. That figure brings Long’s campaign contribution total up to approximately $33,458. She formally jumped into the race for Commission’s District 1 seat back in May. In total, 45 checks were contributed to the Long campaign in September. That…

Pinellas property appraiser candidate Mike Twitty holding pair of late October fundraisers

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Mike Twitty, in his first-ever run for elected office, has hit the ground running. The 48-year-old Republican — and Pinellas County property appraiser hopeful — is a 25-year state-certified general real estate appraiser who, so far, has nabbed the endorsement of everyone from outgoing Pinellas Property Appraiser Pam Dubov, to state Sen. Jeff Brandes, and St. Pete Councilman-elect Ed Montanari. (And that’s just the short list.) Perhaps more impressive still: his fundraising numbers. In August, Twitty raised over $50,000 for…

Doreen DiPolito talks past accomplishments in bid for Clearwater City Council re-election

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

From a political standpoint — especially when talking to City Councilwoman Doreen DiPolito — the past four years in Clearwater have gone pretty well. “Four years ago we started this journey together,” DiPolito said last night to a crowd of supporters. “[And] together we have accomplished our goals of enhancing the quality of life for our citizens, and energizing the character of our community.” DiPolito, a business executive and longtime advocate of women in city government, was speaking at a banquet room at Island…

Mike Mikurak lays out political platform for 2016 Pinellas Commission run

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The first time Mike Mikurak spoke with SaintPetersBlog, he focused on his personal plan for Pinellas County. Over a month later, and after raising $34,000 in contributions and loans for his cause, that plan has become more refined. Mikurak, a 61-year-old Republican from St. Petersburg who’s running for County Commission’s District 3 seat, addressed supporters last night at Island Way Grill, out on Clearwater Beach. “I believe it’s time to put experienced business people, not just career politicians, in charge of our…

Pinellas Property Appraiser candidate Mike Twitty has another stellar month of fundraising

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Political newcomer Mike Twitty doesn’t seem so new when it comes to campaign fundraising. In August, Twitty, a 48-year-old Republican and 25-year state-certified general real estate appraiser, raised a very impressive $50,000 in funds for his 2016 Pinellas County property appraiser run — a fundraising figure which has only been seen a few times in Pinellas County politics since 2006. In September, after receiving a total of 89 unique contributions, Twitty added another $20,000 to his cause, brining his fundraising total up…

County Clerk Ken Burke, in bid for re-election, continues steady fundraising climb

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

If the 2016 election goes anything like the last two, then the nearly $7,000 Ken Burke has raised for his re-election campaign will do just fine. Burke, a 55-year-old Republican from Seminole, has served as Pinellas’ clerk of court since 2004, and ran unopposed in both 2008 and 2012. As of now, no one’s filed to run against him in 2016 either. Despite his present situation, and his past election history, Burke still doesn’t seem to be planning for a…

Pinellas County paying more attention to its pets

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

“It’s been a really great year for animals in Pinellas County.” Those were the words of the Humane Society of Pinellas’ executive director, Sarah Brown, during her October 6 address to county commissioners — their first regular meeting of the month. Brown was speaking  in support of the commission’s proposed new amendments to the County Code’s Animal Services chapter. If approved, the amendments will establish a classification and penalties for “irresponsible pet owners,” and permit Pinellas’ Animal Services to issue…
