Pinellas County Charter Review rejects term limits

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Pinellas County commissioners can stay in office as long as voters keep re-electing them. Like, for real this time. The Pinellas County Charter Review committee has rejected an effort led by state Rep. Larry Ahern to impose term limits. Its members voted Wednesday in favor of removing the issue from further consideration. Ahern put two measures before the board. Both items would go before voters for approval. One Gulfport voting precinct is outperforming all the others in terms of early voter participation. More than 230 Gulfport voters had returned a mail ballot in Precinct 208 as of Wednesday afternoon. The group gave its official nod to Gulfport Mayor Sam Henderson for re-election, snubbing Barbara Banno of an endorsement she probably figured was in the bag. It doesn’t look very good for an openly gay Democrat to lose support from a pro-gay rights group to a…

The gloves came off during a Gulfport City Council meeting Tuesday evening after City Council woman Yolanda Roman proposed a resolution calling for an action plan on continued testing and monitoring of water quality in Clam Bayou. The issue has been a hot button topic in the small city neighboring St. Pete since August when St. Pete diverted millions of gallons of sewage into the water body. Roman’s call for a resolution began innocent enough with City Council member Dan…
