in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Pinellas County Commissioner Ken Welch no longer has a challenger for his 2016 re-election bid. Sharon McManus, a no-party-affiliation candidate, withdrew her name from the race Tuesday. The news comes shortly after Welch began his campaign and posted $5,000 in early contributions. McManus had posted just $72.90 indicating her bid may not have been serious from the get-go. “I am thankful for the tremendous support that we’ve received since kicking off our campaign last week,” Welch said after learning his…

Stephen Nohlgren has retired from his long-time post with the Tampa Bay Times. Nohlgren was a reporter for the Times for 44 years and a member of the paper’s editorial board. SaintPetersblog received a tip from a credible source saying that Nohlgren was no longer working for the paper a couple weeks back. Times communications director Jounice Nealy-Brown was unable to comment on Nohlgren’s employment status at the time but evidence supported our tip. Nohlgren’s bio is still listed on the paper’s…

Reaction to downtown bus changes is hit or miss

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It’s been a few days since buses ditched Williams Park and dispersed along stops throughout downtown as part of the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority’s swap from a hub to a grid system. As expected, there is some confusion among regular riders. To combat problems with riders not knowing where to catch the bus, PSTA employees are spreading out throughout downtown to reach riders and let them know how to catch their routes now that stops aren’t congregating at Williams Park.…

Overlooked Lealman now rising thanks to one start-up nonprofit

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete has Midtown and Child’s Park, but for the county Lealman is one of the most troubled areas home to some of the county’s poorest residents. It’s a mecca for crime with top murder, prostitution and domestic abuse rates. It’s where homes consistently break county codes with overgrown lawns and homes are in disrepair. Children go hungry. Moms and dads make tough choices between food and fixing toilets. But in a community of sad sights, there is good news.…

For all the shouting over access to alley recycling, an awful lot of folks are still bringing the blue bins to the curb

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Universal curbside recycling became universal ‘recycle where you put your trash’ last month, but not everyone has caught on. I was recently taking a stroll through Historic Kenwood and stumbled on a number of big blue bins used for the new-ish recycling in St. Pete. They were parked on the curb, where the city told them last July they should be put. But then the city changed that up after an uproar of citizens in places where trash is collected…

Nonpartisan Gulfport City Council race goes partisan

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Gulfport municipal elections are supposed to be nonpartisan, but party politics have come out in the city’s lone City Council contest. Though voters will never see it on a ballot, incumbent Dan Liedtke is a Republican. His challenger, April Thanos, is a Democrat. In a recent mailer, Thanos called Liedtke out as “a Tea Party conservative.” Liedtke fired back with a social media post countering her mail. But instead of defending the claim or attacking his opponent’s progressivism, Liedtke instead…
