New group aims to restore Williams Park to its historic vibrance

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Buses in Williams Park are gone. Sunday was the first day buses stopped at a variety of places in downtown St. Pete instead of all picking up and dropping off passengers at Williams Park. With the old bus shelters no longer surrounding the park, forming a barrier, St. Pete officials hope the park can finally be a gathering ground for families and festivities that so many other downtown parks are. A brand new group called the Williams Park Partnership is…

Pie in the sky transit proposal: Gondolas in St. Pete

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete wants to move its people around St. Pete over the roads. Earlier this month the city submitted an application for a $40 million federal grant with its big-ticket item focused on Aerial Cable Propelled Transit. Or Gondolas. It’s an almost Jetsons-like vision invoking images of people floating along in bubbles. Though, in St. Pete’s vision they’re not floating, they’re being pulled along cables connected to intermittent posts. Plus it’s technology that already exists. Other countries use Gondolas as…

The Pinellas County Metropolitan Planning Organization is backing St. Pete’s initiative to implement a bike share program in and around downtown. But they’re doing so with some caveats. In an update penned by MPO executive director Whit Blanton, the board spent an hour and a half hearing from St. Pete’s director of transportation Evan Mory, Coast Bike Share’s Eric Trull and a member of its own staff, Rodney Chatman about the plan. With GOP backing, Mike Mikurak continues to grow funding gap in Pinellas Commission contest

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Mike Mikurak has outraised his opponent Charlie Justice more than three to one in his race to unseat the current Commission chair. Mikurak has raised more than $73,000 compared to Justice’s $24,000. In January alone Mikurak nearly doubled Justice’s fundraising totals. Mikurak’s fundraising success is likely the result of a Republican push to re-gain a majority on Commission. Pat Gerard’s election in 2014 replacing Norm Roche gave Democrats a majority for the first time in 50 years. The Pinellas County…

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Bus riders still have one more day to enjoy catching a ride on a Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority bus from Williams Park in downtown St. Pete. But the agency took to the park Friday afternoon so go ahead and say its goodbye.
