Karl Nurse inquiry prompts negative Will Newton report

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Councilmember Karl Nurse prompted a report questioning a City Council’s candidate’s ability to reach consensus if he serves on council. The Lisa Wheeler-Brown campaign has been fighting hard to maintain its footing in the race to replace Wengay Newton. Her opponent is his brother, Will Newton. Earlier this week, the Tampa Bay Times reported that Will Newton had an unimpressive track record as a bargainer for the city’s firefighter union. Of the four bargaining impasses over 10 years,…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown backers tell her opponent to denounce Republican endorsements

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Pinellas Stonewall Democrats are demanding City Council candidate Will Newton denounce endorsements from Republicans who have endorsed him. In a letter sent to Newton by the group, they ask that he “publicly separate himself from former St. Pete Mayor Rick Baker, councilmember-elect Ed Montanari and state Rep. Kathleen Peters. The demand is curious considering the LGBT rights advocacy group has already endorsed Newton’s opponent, Lisa Wheeler-Brown. It’s also odd considering the group has not expressed outrage over other similar…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown campaign caught in a lie over campaign finance missteps

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Lisa Wheeler-Brown’s campaign has admitted it was not the blunders of a previous campaign manager that led to a flurry of reporting errors and a possibly illegal campaign expense, but rather Wheeler-Brown’s own malfeasance. According to The Tampa Tribune, Meagan Salisbury, Wheeler-Brown’s current campaign manager, acknowledged that some of the errors happened after former campaign manager Nick Janovsky left the campaign and that Wheeler-Brown didn’t understand how to properly file some of the expenses and contributions. The result of that is…

I strongly support his effort to become our Council Member,” Baker said. Newton was called out in a Tampa Bay Times article Monday for his…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Thanks to an $11,000 loan from herself, City Council candidate Monica Abbott has now tripled the amount of money raised by her opponent for the District 1 seat covering West St. Pete. Including her loan, Abbott has now raised $12,425 compared to just $4,150 raised by City Council chair Charlie Gerdes in his re-election bid. Abbott also brought in a $250 contribution from City Council member-elect Ed Montanari. Abbott had previously donated to Montanari’s campaign. The City Council hopeful also…

The Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections will begin mailing ballots to voters in St. Pete and Seminole Tuesday to the more than 65,000 domestic voters who requested them. Most of those will be sent to St. Pete voters who will decide three City Council races and four amendments. That race has gotten heated over the past couple of months as…

Rick Kriseman’s list of woes continues to grow

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

He’s not up for re-election until 2017, but already the cards are stacking up against St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman. The same mayor who always shows up in public with a beaming smile touting his Sunshine City also seems to have a dark cloud following him around. No matter how much good Kriseman accomplishes, he always seems to be moments away from damage control. Since taking office in 2013 Kriseman has faced mounting criticism for failing to garner enough support…
