in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A group called LocalShops1 on Change.org started a petition calling on the city to consider locally owned restaurants for the Pier restaurant planned for the Pier head at Pier Park. Under the Request for Proposal for the 7,600-square-foot space, the city listed its preferred proposal as one that would offer “a nationally or regionally recognized chain restaurant or uniquely branded destination restaurant.” While downtown St. Pete does have some chain restaurants available for the choosing, it boasts an impressively wide…

Here’s a classic example of rich people problems. Two couples living on waterfront property along Coffee Pot Boulevard in Old Northeast in homes valued of upwards of $1 million each, are bickering over a dock. Todd and Barbara McCallister are suing Yueh-Chao and Dan Richardson to have the couple’s dock removed. The McCallister’s say it encroaches onto their own dock space. Crews were on site Friday afternoon clearing debris from the Pier head into large bins using cranes and other heavy machinery. The overall structure is still mostly intact. Portions of the exterior façade have been removed or partially removed.…

District 7 candidates must broaden reach for citywide vote

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

After the St. Pete Primary Election that moved candidates Lisa Wheeler-Brown and Will Newton on to the Nov. 3 primary, we took a look at Election Day data in District 7 to see what strategies the two candidates may find useful. The general election, however, will be citywide. That means there’s a whole swath of voters to attract in districts where the demographic is entirely different than the mostly impoverished district the candidates would represent if elected. Looking at numbers…

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

As Tropical Storm Erika comes barreling toward Florida and Tampa Bay sits menacingly inside the cone of uncertainty, the Tampa Bay Times wants you to know a bit about where those names come from and why some of us will sadly never become a hurricane. According to the Times, the National Hurricane Center used a combination of letters and numbers to describe hurricanes. But apparently that wasn’t easy enough to market and lended to a bit of confusion. With names,…
