Publix touted as the “Wal-Mart Slayer” by Forbes

in Uncategorized by

Publix is the first thing that people miss when they move out of Florida. I am confident of this despite having no actual evidence beyond reports from friends.  But it is no surprise that Forbes magazine has recognized Publix as the most profitable grocer in America, the largest employee-owned company, and sees the Publix formula one that can fend off Wal-Mart’s cornering of the grocer market. As published Wednesday on Forbes.com and in print this August, Publix President Todd Jones…

Google Trends on Anthony Weiner, royal babies, and rainy days

in Uncategorized by

You know who doesn’t care about Anthony Weiner? Me. And all of Wyoming. It doesn’t matter how many years back you look, when it comes to Google web searches of the frequently shamed former Congressman and NYC mayoral-hopeful’s name, Wyoming has no interest in Anthony Weiner. People in Wyoming also don’t care to search for “royal baby” — and are joined in that disinterest by residents of North Dakota and Alaska. Anyone want to guess who has been searching for…

Proposed reinsurance tax legislation could be disastrous for Florida, says Gov. Scott

in Uncategorized by

Gov. Rick Scott chimed in on Tuesday to the national debate on legislation that would deny tax deductions for certain reinsurance premiums paid to foreign-based affiliates of domestic insurers.  H.R. 2054 and S. 991 were introduced by Massachusetts Rep. Richard Neal and New Jersey’s Rep. Bill Pascrell and Sen. Robert Menendez in alignment with a proposal in President Obama’s 2014 budget. To Gov. Scott and others, these measures could have a “disastrous impact” on homeowners and businesses in Florida, reducing…

Mike Weinstein running for Jax City Council, but announces without rapping

in Uncategorized by

“Dude, that was so 2010!” begins the sequel web video inaugurating Mike Weinstein’s 2012 run for State Senate, District 4.    But unlike his 2010 campaign for reelection to the Florida House, where Weinstein’s video of rapping supporters went viral across the nation and was dubbed by many to be among the greatest and/or (your choice of adjective here) campaign videos of all time, Weinstein’s 2012 groove didn’t get him too far against former State Rep. Aaron Bean who won…

in Uncategorized by

In a blog post yesterday, I highlighted Miami as the one region of Florida where income mobility potential exceeds the national average for children who grow up in low-income households; yet today, Miami is once again singled out to the opposite extent in terms of the migration of wealth lost to other counties and states.  In a study titled “How Money Walks” by Travis Brown, Florida fares exceptionally well in terms of a net gain of wealth from other states,…

An extensive analysis of 150 biotechnology incubators in 22 countries has named the University of Florida’s Sid Martin Biotechnology Incubator as the “World’s Best.” The study, conducted by the Sweden-based research group UBI and released this week, assessed more than 50 performance indicators including the incubator’s record on job creation, talent retention, access to funding, network enhancement and post-incubation relationships. Overall, US programs performed more highly than European incubators. While  European incubators spend about nine times as much on seed…

South Florida strongest in state for income mobility, according to new study

in Uncategorized by

When it comes to upward mobility of Floridians, the Miami and Ft. Lauderdale metro area is the most promising place to live, according to a study highlighted in Monday’s New York Times. The report highlighted the work of a team of researchers from Harvard and the University of California at Berkeley who analyzed an enormous database of earnings records to estimate intergenerational mobility — i.e. the chances that a child raised in a low-income household grows up to escape poverty. …
