The Florida Medical Association PAC today endorsed State Rep. Amanda Murphy in her re-election bid for House District 36. The New Port Richey Democrat faces the winner of the Aug. 26 Republican primary — either Chris Gregg of James Mathieu – for the seat covering much of Pasco County. “Thank you to State Representative Amanda Murphy for her leadership and service through several of her health care committee assignments in the Florida House,” said FMA PAC President Ralph Nobo in…

Say No on 2 could’ve more clearly communicated it’s point, but Amendment 2 opponents right to raise concern about pot edibles

in Uncategorized by

Ben Pollara and other supporters of the amendment to legalize medical marijuana are seizing on an image posted on the Facebook page of the Vote No On 2 organization which attempts to draw a line between the expected availability of edible pot and the possibility such “pot cookies” might be used to commit date rape. The image is captioned, “Will the new face of date rape look like a cookie?” Subtle the image is not. Pollara, who never passes up the…

Election year politics at heart of Dept. of Health’s decision to hold lottery for pot dispensaries

in Uncategorized by

It pains me to make this prediction — because if I am right it means sick children won’t get the help they need and have been promised — but there will be full-scale medical marijuana in Florida before there is Charlotte’s Web, the extract low in THC used to treat patients suffering from conditions that include epilepsy. I know it’s not new, but that Pier is perfect to imitate San Francisco’s Pier 39.   “I couldn’t find a good, real-time image, but this rendering offers some ideas. Imagine redesigning the Pier similar to this, while moving the…

Duke Energy seeks state approval for natural-gas plant site

Duke Energy Florida submitted a detailed application with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for the site of a new Citrus County power plant. In May, Duke announced intentions to build the natural-gas plant, as well as shutting down two existing coal-fired generating units. However, the utility company must go through a state site-approval process, ultimately leading to a decision by the governor and Florida Cabinet. Filed Aug. 1 with the DEP, the application was sent to the state Division…

TBT: Good riddance Andrew, Camille and Charley

in Uncategorized by

Today commemorates the 22nd anniversary of what became Hurricane Andrew. On August 14, 1992, a tropical wave formed off the coast of Africa and began to move westward. The next day, meteorologists began to classify the system, thunderstorm activity became more concentrated, and narrow spiral rain bands developed around a small but growing center of circulation. Named Tropical Depression Three, at the time, the system was still 1,630 miles east-southeast of Barbados, and tracking west-northwestward at 20 mph. By August…
