An iconic Tampa Bay eatery was once again recognized as one of the nation’s best restaurants.

Bern’s Steak House is one of America’s top 101 restaurants according to online cuisine magazine Daily Meal.

Tampa’s legendary eatery placed 28th, one ahead of New York-based Del Posto and just behind John Besh’s August contemporary French restaurant in New Orleans. The only other Florida eateries on the list are in Miami: Joe’s Stone Crab at No. 55 and Michael’s Genuine at No. 74, both.

In 2013, Bern’s listed at No. 60 and No. 12 in 2011. It did not list in 2012.

New York’s Le Bernardin made it to No. 1 this year was. Michael Mina’s San Francisco restaurant landed at No. 44. Mina is opening the Farmtable Kitchen in the St. Petersburg Sundial complex this year.

Daily Meal’s staff comprise the list. This year, editors accepted nominations from outside food critics and restaurant experts nationwide. Judges picked the winners from 430 restaurants.

Opened in 1956 in South Tampa, Bern’s Steak House is perhaps Tampa Bay’s most renowned restaurant.

Bern’s was also a semifinalist in the 2014 James Beard Foundation awards, and was the only Tampa Bay-area restaurant recognized with a Beard award.

Derrick Pagan, Bern’s sommelier, also won for wine service in 1992, the second year that award was given.
