Bill Clinton to campaign for Charlie Crist in Miami on Friday

Former Republican Charlie Crist is pulling out the big guns, now that he is officially the Democratic nominee for governor.

Former President Bill Clinton, widely considered the leading Democratic fundraiser, will visit Miami on Friday, September 6, to campaign for Crist.

Clinton and Crist will headline a rally starting 6 p.m. at the J.W. Marriott Marquis on Biscayne Boulevard.

An appearance in Florida is a natural for the former president, as his wife, Hillary Clinton, considers her own White House run.

Both Clintons are well aware of the significance of Florida — quite possibly the largest political swing state —  for Democratic presidential success. A Crist win in November will certainly bolster Hillary’s prospects in 2016.

Bill Clinton first came to Florida for the annual Democratic fundraising event in 1981, known then as the “Jefferson-Jackson” dinner, visiting dozens of times ever since. In 2012, Clinton was a big supporter of President Barack Obama in Florida towards the end of the presidential election.

Clinton’s political gratitude to the Sunshine State goes all the way back to the 1991 Florida Democratic Party convention. After winning 54 percent of the straw poll, it became a major factor in Clinton’s rise from obscurity and decision to seek the White House.
