Bill Protz drops outs out of St. Pete City Council race; Steve Kornell will be re-elected by default

Good news for supporters of City Councilman Steve Kornell: Bill Protz, his lone challenger in the upcoming municipal elections, has officially withdrawn from the race, citing a turn-for-the worse in his wife’s health.  Deputy City Clerk Cathy Davis confirmed Protz’ withdrawal.

Because ballots have been yet to be printed, Protz’ name will not appear despite having qualified for the election in June.  Incumbent City Councilman Kornell, who was elected in 2009 to fill the rest of Jamie Bennett’s term, will now be re-elected by default, although I wish Steve was being e-elected by acclimation.

A note about Bill Protz, who I spoke with in person last night.  Bill is a very, very good man and he would have made a capable City Councilman, probably in the tradition of Larry Williams.  I wish him and his wife Godspeed.
