Renewing a heated debate from the 2011 session, Rep. Ed Hooper, R-Clearwater, filed a proposal Thursday that could lead to circuit-court judges signing off on the sales or leases of public hospitals, reports the News Service of Florida. The bill (HB 711) likely will draw opposition from public hospitals, which defeated similar proposals during the 2011 session. But some for-profit hospital companies have supported the proposals, arguing that court review would lead to a fairer process when public hospitals are sold or leased. Sen. Rene Garcia, R-Hialeah, filed a bill (SB 464) last month that is identical to the Hooper bill.
