Bill to ban lawmaker-college employees dies in Senate

Legislation that would have barred lawmkakers from taking jobs with state universities or colleges while in the Legislature died on a tie vote in a Senate Committee, reports the News Service of Florida. The bill is aimed at situations like the one that brought down former Speaker Ray Sansom, who was accused of slipping an item into the budget for a college that later hired him. “If someone’s there working for a college or university, and voting on an appropriations bill, that’s a potential conflict,” said the bill’s sponsor, Sen. John Thrasher, R-St. Augustine. Opponents said the measure would put college employees in a class with felons as people who aren’t allowed to run for the Legislature.
