Bill Young gives F-22s the ole college try

From the Buzz: As futile an exercise as it may be, Congressman C.W. Bill Young put up a fight today for funding for F-22 fighter jets. The Pinellas County Republican had this to say after a floor speech by defense appropriations chairman John Murtha, who has agreed to follow the Senate and drop the $1.7s billion for seven more aircraft.

“Our soldiers tell us that, ‘We’ll go anywhere, we’ll fight whatever battle we’re told to fight, but please make sure that if there’s an airplane above the battlefield that it belongs to the United States, that it does not belong to a threatening army.’ We cannot afford to take a chance and risk the lives of the troops on the ground if we don’t secure the air overhead.”

Young has an amendment to restore the funding. But Murtha, D-Pa., has an amendment that would divert the money to parts and other uses.
