Business and Professional Women of St. Petersburg/Pinellas will hold the group’s annual “Unhappy Hour” in recognition of Equal Pay Day on Tuesday, April 17, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Marchand’s Bar and Grill inside the historic Renaissance Vinoy Resort in downtown St. Petersburg at 501 Fifth Avenue NE. The public is invited to this not-for-women-only event. There is no cost to attend and no RSVP is necessary.
Equal Pay Day, which this year falls on April 17, marks the day the average woman in the United States finally earns the same amount of pay that her male counterpart earned in the previous calendar year.  According to recent U.S. Census Bureau statistics, women on average earn 77 cents for every dollar paid to their male counterparts. Therefore, if a man were paid $50,000 to perform his job from January 1 through December 31, 2011, it will take a woman in the same position, on average, from January 1, 2011, through April 17, 2012, to earn the same amount.
