The National Republican Congressional Committee is adding seven new House GOP candidates to the “Contender” level of its Young Guns program, including Carlos Curbelo, running against Democratic Rep. Joe Garcia in Florida’s 26th Congressional District.
This designates the candidates as their top challengers of the cycle.
Given their 34-seat majority in the House, Republicans have limited opportunities for offense this cycle, but these seven candidates have met specific benchmarks outlined by the committee for building their campaign apparatuses.
The other six candidates are: Lee Zeldin, challenging incumbent Democratic Rep. Tim Bishop in NY-01; Ryan Costello, the GOP nominee for retiring Rep. Jim Gerlach’s seat in PA-06; Torrey Westrom, the candidate facing Democratic Rep. Collin Peterson in MN-07; Pedro Celis, running against Democratic Rep. Suzan DelBene in WA-01; Jeff Gorell, challenging Democratic Rep. Julia Brownley in CA-26; and Dan Debicella, running against Democratic Rep. Jim Himes in CT-04.
The news comes a day after the NRCC added two incumbent GOP Reps — David Jolly in FL-13 and Tim Walberg in MI-07 — to its incumbent protection program.
