CASA launches “Soup-er Bowl” food drive

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

St. Pete’s main domestic violence advocacy group, Community Action Stops Abuse, is collecting food for its newly opened center. CASA opened a new 100-bed shelter last summer giving the group the ability to serve more than three times the number of victims previously possible.

While the new shelter has allowed CASA to better integrate services and serve more families in need, it’s also created a need for more food.

To answer the call business owners from across the Bay pulled together to place more than 70 donation boxes in more than 40 retail stores, condos and business offices to collect non-perishable food items.

In honor of the Superbowl, CASA is calling the food drive its “Soup-er Bowl.”

Individual residents can participate in the drive by dropping off items like canned soup, beans or meats to one of the Bay area locations. CASA is also inviting Tampa Bay area residents who plan to host Superbowl parties to run drives of their own.

Some individuals have already committed to collecting items on Superbowl Sunday to be dropped off at CASA’s office the next day.

The group will also welcome gift cards or checks that can be used to purchase fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and cheese. Donations can be delivered to CASA’s administrative offices located at 1011 First Ave. North the day after the Superbowl between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m and throughout that week. The office will also be open for donations Mondays throughout February.

The group also maintains a running wish list of needed items on its website. Examples of some items currently needed include diapers, baby wipes, winter jackets, twin sheets, blankets and pillow cases, undergarments, first aid kits, cleaning supplies and bus passes.

A complete list of items is on CASA’s website and changes frequently.
