What an active PCDEC could have done

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

As I passed by the Saturday Morning Market and saw Scott Wagman’s hard-working volunteers continue to collect the requisite number of signatures from Saint Petersburg voters, a task which Jamie Bennett’s campaign only recently completed, I couldn’t help but wonder what a difference it would make if there was a more active, more politically astute Pinellas County Democratic Executive Committee. Let’s say I was chair of the PCDEC, a terrifying thought to some, I am sure. But if I were…

Charlie Justice’s bold move

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Well, Charlie Justice set off quite a roogoodoo yesterday when he announced he is running against Bill Young in 2010. I give Charlie all the credit in the world for stepping up to challenge Young. I was just so sick and tired of the annual Will-Bill-Young-retire parlor game. Charlie’s announcement doesn’t end that, but the writing is on the wall for Young, who, despite being chair of the defense appropriations subcommittee, is still a Republican vote in the House. Can…

Angela Rouson files to run for District 5

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

As I first tweeted yesterday, Angela Rouson, the absolute rock star wife of state representative Darryl Rouson, has filed to run for the District 5 seat on the St. Petersburg City Council. The former chair of the Pinellas Housing Authority, Rouson was one of the few sane voices on the authority. Her ability to keep the peace among divisive elements is a talent she will certainly put to good use on the City Council.

Half-off sale on Dick Morris

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Evidently ticket sales to see Dick Morris “Live on Stage” (as opposed to Dead on TV?) at the Palladium are not the summer blockbuster the Pinellas County Republican Executive Committee expected. Regular and VIP tickets are now being sold at half what they were originally priced, which, no matter what the cost, are still too much to go listen that bloated blowhard pontificate.

If the Times cares about poor people, why publish their mugshot?

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

As is often the case, the left hand doesn’t always know what the right hand is writing. Case in point is today’s noble editorial in the SPTimes bemoaning the fact that several courts in Florida have resurrected the de facto debtor’s prison, in which thousands of Floridians are jailed for failing to pay assessed court fees and fines. Yet, this editorial comes from the same newspaper which just launched an online feature for readers to view the mugshots of the…

Now that he has their campaign contributions, Deveron Gibbons quits Housing Authority, five other civic boards

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Corporate executive Deveron Gibbons has quit six local boards to focus on his campaign for mayor. Of course he resigned! Now that Deveron is done wringing $500 checks out of his fellow board members, what use are they? Deveron has planned on running for well over a year and knew full well the time commitment it takes to run for public office, and now he decides to resign. This mass resignation stink of fear. Fear that there really is a…

Larry Williams finally takes down billboard!

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

What a successful day it’s been! I cold turkeyed the Bay Buzz, the city published the campaign finance reports online and, driving home, I noticed that Larry Williams finally took down that horrible billboard he has had up since his 2001 campaign.
