Pier Selection Committee to announce design ranking today

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Pier Selection Committee will make its long-awaited ranking of the seven designs shortlisted to replace the current inverted pyramid Friday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m. The top of those will likely take the contract. It’s been a long and tumultuous road for city officials on a quest to find a new icon for St. Pete’s downtown waterfront. In 2013 it looked like there would be a lavish over-water walkway. But it was dubbed a sidewalk to nowhere and voted…

Mitch Perry Report for 3.20.15 — March sadness

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It’s the first full weekend of the NCAA Basketball tournament, the time when some writers wax absurd about “brackets” and “the insanity of March Madness.” And yes, there were a couple of thrilling upsets and buzzard-beaters yesterday to begin the first full day of the 68-team championship. As a basketball aficionado, however, I’ve been calling out the college game for several years now as being a severely weakened product, and thankfully, the mainstream media is finally getting the picture. Department of Environmental Protection employee Barton Bibler did not receive a reprimand for violating Gov. Rick Scott’s unofficial prohibition on the term “climate change,” says an agency representative. DEP Communications Director Lauren Engel responded Thursday by maintaining the censure was for “personal political advocacy related to the Keystone XL pipeline.” “As stated in Mr. Bibler’s written reprimand,” Engel said in an email. “He was reprimanded for violating three DEP standards of conduct, including poor performance, insubordination and conduct unbecoming a public…

A marijuana lobbyist said to me a couple of weeks ago that he suspected the latest challenge to the Charlotte’s Web rule would “smoke out” people’s true intention; whether they disliked the rule or disliked the law. It’s the end of the third week of the session and we’re getting to the “smoke out” point on a few issues. Thursday things got a little smoky with the environment, healthcare and the list of approved words for state employees. Don’t know…

St. Pete City Council lacks excitement for FDOT express lane plan

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council members didn’t seem too impressed with plans to ease congestion along some of the area’s most congested thoroughfares. The Florida Department of Transportation has seven “starter” projects that could break ground within the next 3-5 years that would create pay-to-use express lanes on parts of Northbound I-275 between Gandy Boulevard and Fourth Street and 118 Avenue and then across the Howard Frankland Bridge into Tampa. The $9 billion project also includes express lanes through Tampa along…

House prepares Dept. of Corrections bill; Dems say it lacks oversight

in Top Headlines by

A record number of inmates — 346 — died last year in Florida prisons. Most were from natural causes but federal and state law enforcement agencies are investigating why there were so many deaths. In recent legislative hearings, several prison guards testified under oath about the stressful conditions they work under. State Sen. Greg Evers is behind a bill that sets up an independent prison oversight board that reports directly to the Legislature. The House is preparing a proposal that might be released…
